i grew up next to a mountain, and there is nothing quite like standing at the top and looking down at the world below. once upon a time, on a school trip i sat on the edge of an aqueduct where even the toughest kids were cowering a few steps back. a classmate accused me of faking a fear of heights on the plane.

i love heights. i hate flying.

after spending all weekend transcribing all the notes from my recalled book, i brought it back to the main university library. while i was there, i picked up some other books, and then went to the smaller university library next door. you can see where i'm going with this. there was a copy of my recalled book in the library next door!,

yes folks, someone recalled my copy because they didn't want to walk to 50 yards to get it from the other university library.

• that my thumb finally looks like it's healing
• that at some point yesterday evening, i finished transcribing all my notes from that book.
• veronica mars: at 8:30 last night when my brain was so entirely fried and there was nothing on, nix suggested that we start watching the first season (which my sister had lent me). we are now 4 episodes in, and i'm hooked.

• that some horrible little undergrad keeps recalling the books i have out from the library--including the 600 page biography of my author, which i have read, and marked with post-it notes, but hadn't started transcribing quotations until last night. there goes the weekend.

this is a mighty wurlitzer:

when we were in florida, we saw venus (which i have already endorsed here because of my undying love for peter o'toole) at the tampa theatre. now nix's dad does not live in tampa, so i was a bit reticent to drive all that way for a movie (even one that starred lawrence of arabia), but nix told me it would be worth it. and right nix was.

before the show, a mighty wurlitzer appeared from the stage floor, and let me tell you that the chandelier falling in the phantom of the opera (not that i endorse the phantom of the opera, mind) did not excite me like this thing. i felt like a kid at christmas!

to round up my commercial morning, i'll throw in that the commercial with the dog pound, that has all the puppies looking out of cages and the voice over says "i know i'm a good dog" makes me cry every single time i see it

insomnia--the condition, not the movie. i quite like the movie with stellan skarsgård. didn't see the remake, though i bet it's not as good.

also displeased that when you look up insomnia in imdb the original is under "other results" while the remake and a friends episode appear under "popular results."

i'm a bit of a james bond junkie. i haven't seen all, but many, and i think that casino royale was just what was needed to keep the james bond franchise from imploding on itself.

• craig plaid the character as if no one else had ever slipped into that dinner jacket before.
• the writers stopped trying to write dr. no again (don't get me wrong, dr. no is still the best one--but it is of its time).
• there was a pretty fantastic parkour sequence in the beginning, i think entirely written to make the audience say "pierce who?"
• eva green allows you to forget that they ever made denise richards a nuclear physicist.

last night i was waiting in line at the cvs, and the guy in front of me said "merry christmas" to the woman behind the counter. this cued his 3 year old, who yelled "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" like he was delivering it to the cheap seats. we agreed that this was spoken like a kid who knew that santa was coming.

i'm taking christmas break here, and i'll hopefully figure out what i want to do about that pesky term of use. i started this thing to make me take more pictures with a new camera, and if i can't post them without having them turn up in google ads, i'm not sure i want to continue here.

a really good version of oh holy night. there aren't many, and for a while whitney houston had ruined the song for me entirely.

i recommend tracy chapman's version. my favorite was aoife o'donnovan, but she doesn't seem to be on itunes. she is also with a group called sometimes why, so here is a link to one of their songs (definitely not o holy night)(though it may raise your heart rate, who knows...)
