in honor of the oscars, here are my favorite movies of last year

honorable mention to: notes on a scandal, this film is not yet rated, the prestige and casino royale

best film i haven't seen yet: the queen--but i even love helen mirren in caligula, so perhaps i'm biased

thursday-things that make the heart beat faster

this is a mighty wurlitzer:

when we were in florida, we saw venus (which i have already endorsed here because of my undying love for peter o'toole) at the tampa theatre. now nix's dad does not live in tampa, so i was a bit reticent to drive all that way for a movie (even one that starred lawrence of arabia), but nix told me it would be worth it. and right nix was.

before the show, a mighty wurlitzer appeared from the stage floor, and let me tell you that the chandelier falling in the phantom of the opera (not that i endorse the phantom of the opera, mind) did not excite me like this thing. i felt like a kid at christmas!

while we were in florida, we helped father nix sort through a room full of slides, negatives and snapshots. for those of you wondering, nix has been making the same pouty face since at least age 3. pretty cute.

this is a bit of a cheat because it's the light that's orange, not the curtain, but i'm a bit lazy at the moment

not sure if i'll post from the sunshine state or not. we'll see. . .

tuesday-things that displease me

• packing
• the bears' performance in miami
• that a key plot line in studio 60 on the sunset strip implies that women like to be stalked, and if you stalk them long enough, they will admit that they were in love with you all along

monday-things that please me

• puppies
• sunshine
• leaving on wednesday for somewhere that is not 15 degrees

friday-things that amuse me

• the commercial with president lincoln and the groundhog that says "your dreams miss you"--i have no idea what the product is called and am mostly against this sort of drug, but for some reason, it cracks me up
• the commercial with the guy dressed up as the sun cooking breakfast for the little girl and when she asks why he's in a hurry he says that "daddy has to get up very early to light and heat the earth"

to round up my commercial morning, i'll throw in that the commercial with the dog pound, that has all the puppies looking out of cages and the voice over says "i know i'm a good dog" makes me cry every single time i see it
