friday-things that puzzle me

human behavior. no, not the björk song, though that grateful grapefruit is admittedly puzzling. nope, just generally the way people act, especially in crowd. i went to an outdoor concert last night and people are just nuts. imagine a big lawn in the middle of a city square, and picture the following three examples:

  • la famille--these people were sitting in front of me (less than three feet from me) and the father of the delightful little ragamuffin moves her enormous stroller directly in front of me. he does this intentionally and without acknowledging that he has just completely blocked my view. we won't get into the mother and her visible thong. i moved.
  • les danseurs-imagine the two whitest and worst dancers in the world--the kind that stick out in any crowd of even moderate dancers (hell, even untalented dancers). now imagine them in a group of people who are not dancing. i felt like i was watching a saturday night live skit.
  • l'idiot--a little old lady in a wheelchair being wheeled about by a young man who was obviously stoned. my eyesight isn't good enough to have seen the look on her face.

the highlight, however, was the forty-something middle-management guy and the homeless guy with the water bottle (that i'll speculate was not filled with water) shaking their respective groove things together.

I happened to see Michelle Shocked in concert, and there was one hippie guy of advanced age dancing spastically in front of the stage. She challenged him to disrobe, and he blushed and demurred, whereupon she questioned his hippie cred, as it were. For an encore, she and her band sang an accapella version of the 23rd Psalm, which was beautiful and sweetly retro.
