survey

(this is entry number 50, by the way, proving that i have no life)

this week's survey:

what is the greatest kiss on film?

jack and i were talking about this for some reason over dinner after class the other night, so i thought i'd let you, my five readers, weigh in.

personally, i think it's lauren bacall and humphrey bogart in to have and have not

the scene (as quoted on imdb.com)

[slim kisses steve]
steve: what did you do that for?
slim: i've been wondering if i'd like it.
steve: what's the decision?
slim: i don't know yet.
[they kiss again]
slim: it's even better when you help.

Best Kisses:

1. To Have and Have Not (as already referenced by Nil)

2. Amelie (the benedictory kiss at the end between Amelie and Nino)

3. Pump Up the Volume (Mark and Nora in the backyard)

4. Henry & June (take your pick of scenes and people)

5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Hedwig and Tommy, when it gets windy)

6. Heavenly Creatures (Pauline and Juliet, during the Orson Welles noir sequence)

7. Stage Beauty (Ned and Maria, when Ned is teaching her positions)

8. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Indy and Elsa, when they’re fighting)

Almost Kisses (in some cases, better than actually kissing):

1. Sideways (Miles and Maya, right after Maya gives the vineyard speech and Miles doesn’t kiss her)

2. Royal Tannenbaums (Margot and Richie, when they meet at the bus stop and don’t kiss)

3. Twelfth Night (Viola and Orsino, when Viola is listening to Feste’s song and forgets herself and almost kisses Orsino even though she is still disguised as a man)

4. Cruel Intentions (Sebastian and Kathryn, when they strike the deal)

5. Bound (Violet and Corky, when Violet gets Corky to admit that she dropped the ring down the sink deliberately)

6. Double Indemnity (Walter and Phyllis, during the bracelet speech)

I claim a special exemption for old movies, which make it hard for me for some reason to pull individual kisses out of them. Maybe it’s the 5 or 8 second rule or whatever it was, or the way they violently pulled themselves so close together that they had to crane their heads back or up. I’m sure there are almost or actual kisses in High Society (between Bing and Grace) or The Philadelphia Story or Sabrina (the original) that I’m missing. Hence, dear reader, due to this neurological inability, I ask your pardon for being so gauche as to list movies almost entirely made after 1980.
