friday-things that puzzle me

why my computer at home is no longer connecting to the internet.

also, why a country founded by immigrants-whose motto used to be e pluribus unum thinks this is a good idea

and don't get me started on this

addendum - an additional thing that pleases me

steve almond

for this, for the evil b.b. chow and for writing a very clever inscription in my book.

(for those of you who don't already know who i am, that first word is "listen" and not my name)

monday-things that please me

errol flynn

he was my first crush after ray charles.

i watched the adventures of robin hood again, over the weekend, which saved me from an otherwise horrid weekend of studying.

my favorite, which i cannot find anywhere, is against all flags. errol flynn and pirates. what could be better than that?

12 May 2006

survey

(this is entry number 50, by the way, proving that i have no life)

this week's survey:

what is the greatest kiss on film?

jack and i were talking about this for some reason over dinner after class the other night, so i thought i'd let you, my five readers, weigh in.

personally, i think it's lauren bacall and humphrey bogart in to have and have not

the scene (as quoted on imdb.com)

[slim kisses steve]
steve: what did you do that for?
slim: i've been wondering if i'd like it.
steve: what's the decision?
slim: i don't know yet.
[they kiss again]
slim: it's even better when you help.

friday-things that puzzle me

so many things this week. . . the rain, the mumps, the spies

i'm going to instead choose kieth richards. i know we joke that after a nuclear disaster it would just be monsieur and the cockroaches, but is the hubris going to far now? what is he thinking-"the drugs haven't killed me? the rock & roll life hasn't killed me? i must be invincible - i know, i'll jump out of a coconut tree. . ."

i salute you, mr richards. remember, it doesn't always work out so well. one day you're going to want to let death out of the sack, i reckon.

tuesday-things that displease me

like the man said: hell is other people.

specifically, i think hell is other people on public transportation. the top three offenders:
  • people who talk loudly on their mobile phones for the entire ride (we don't care, and you're not cool or important)
  • people who let their children crawl on, kick and generally molest the people sitting next to them without so much as telling the child to stop or apologizing to the poor guy in the suit who is just trying to get home from work
  • people (and i may have complained about this before) who think that the train is an appropriate place for personal hygiene. i've gotten so i can laugh at the 20 minutes of make-up application, but please people--do not pare your fingernails on the train!

endorsement

oh, my five readers,

we've been recommended!

but we don't have a myspace space to tell ck how much we love him (or i don't at least), so he'll have to come and find us.

glad that you finally got the burn pile burned my dearie-o.

friday-things that puzzle me

how the restaurant where we dined last night can continue to exist in such a high rent district with such bad food. the clams were rubbery, the white sauce consisted of oil and pepper, the salad dressing was wishbone and the bruschetta made with a ton of dried oregano.

i'd name the restaurant, but if it's a front for something, i'd prefer to refuse their offers.

ah well. we went for cannoli afterwards which made the outing worth while.

that disney won't rest until they have completely taken over broadway. (also playing right now, anne rice's lestat) (what happened to original material) (or good material for that matter?)

these trees which line the road to my building. they have a very specific fragrance that becomes overwhelming when they all bloom at once. (i'm not writing what the fragrance is, as i will come up on an entirely different category of google searches, if i do)

monday-things that please me

  • cyndi lauper - we just saw threepenny opera at studio 54, and she was brilliant. her "solomon song" was one of the most amazing performances i've seen on stage. plus she is smoking hot. look here and here and here - the second link is an npr story which has a clip of her singing, and of the ever fabulous wallace shawn
  • blossom dearie - we caught her cabaret act last night. i've been a fan for years, and she's even better in person!
  • martinis

here's a martini:
