friday-things that puzzle me

how, without sounding parental or scolding, to talk to someone whom you love deeply, who will not admit that they have a problem.

Well, one strategy to try to get them to talk about the incidents related to the problem in as much detail as possible, though some intricate gymnastics are required when one is rebuffed with throw-away one-liners.

Another is to proceed as if the person were already taking the steps or had adopted the proper attitude you think they should be taking/adopting, and wait for them to contradict you.

Or you could just hand them a mock informational pamphlet, and let humor disable them.
