tuesday-things that displease me

my own bad spatial sense and general stupidity.

case in point: saturday, nix and i, as i have said, were in provincetown. we arrived at the breakwater, and i thought it might be fun to walk out on it. suffice it to say it was much farther than i had anticipated.



by the time we reached the ocean, we were exhausted, sunburned and dehydrated (we had not thought to bring water with us).

we decided, rather than walk back the way we came, we would walk over to the lighthouse (different light house than the first picture) and take the ferry.

the ferry was quite some time in coming, because we missed the first one, almost missed the second one, and the beach was treated to a particularly unpleasant view of me as i waded through bum high water to get to the ferry.

we went back to the mainland, found a bar, and basked in our sunburn.

where all of the tango-ers were last night. we showed up. we were ready to dance, and there was no music, and were no people who knew what they were doing.

my mom thinks that these are the new jelly shoes. i disagree.

tuesday-things that displease me

those "chirp" mobile phones (i'd give you a link, but that would only encourage you to buy one)

the only thing worse than that horrid chirping sound is the obnoxious people yelling into their phones.

honestly--is this really the best technology money can buy?

friday-things that puzzle me

human behavior. no, not the björk song, though that grateful grapefruit is admittedly puzzling. nope, just generally the way people act, especially in crowd. i went to an outdoor concert last night and people are just nuts. imagine a big lawn in the middle of a city square, and picture the following three examples:

• la famille--these people were sitting in front of me (less than three feet from me) and the father of the delightful little ragamuffin moves her enormous stroller directly in front of me. he does this intentionally and without acknowledging that he has just completely blocked my view. we won't get into the mother and her visible thong. i moved.
  
• les danseurs-imagine the two whitest and worst dancers in the world--the kind that stick out in any crowd of even moderate dancers (hell, even untalented dancers). now imagine them in a group of people who are not dancing. i felt like i was watching a saturday night live skit.
  
• l'idiot--a little old lady in a wheelchair being wheeled about by a young man who was obviously stoned. my eyesight isn't good enough to have seen the look on her face.
  

the highlight, however, was the forty-something middle-management guy and the homeless guy with the water bottle (that i'll speculate was not filled with water) shaking their respective groove things together.

it's usually my policy to only post pictures that i took, but as it's 7:17 and already 81 degrees, i feel that shortly i will need one of these:

also, i need all of the girls who feel like taking the train this morning to pause for a moment and drink a big glass of water. yesterday i got to work 45 minutes late becuase of all of the fainters.

why i got married or bothered to get a cat when this is in my living room.

(my cat is bravely sitting with me at the moment, making sure gregor doesn't follow me into the office)

thursday-things that i need

for everyone in congress, and probably everyone in the world to spend 45 minutes listening to Dr. Doug Melton of the harvard stem cell institute.

honestly kids, in 50 years they're going to look at that veto and wonder why the president of the united states didn't want to cure cancer.

note: to anyone who objects to stem cell research on moral grounds, let me point out that this bill did not make using material from terminated pregnancies illegal. that's entirely legal (not at all what these scientists do, but still legal). scientists who work with embryonic stem cells think that it is better to use left over fertilized eggs from in vitro fertilization clinics to try and cure disease. the president apparently thinks it's better to incinerate them.
